Best Money Can Buy Cars Under 1k in 2021

So the time is here, you have just passed your car practical test and the search for the best money can buy cars under 1k. A car under £1000 and one which will not break down within weeks of purchase (hopefully).

I have been there before many years ago I had to go on a bargain hunt for a cheap family car with a low insurance group. My bargain hunting got me a decent car. That cheap car under 1k then was a 2006 Peugeot 307. However, this list may be very useful for a new driver looking for a cheap car under 1k.

I have drawn up a few good picks which could well match your expectations. These cars are cheap to tax, insure, and run that is, return a decent Mpg.

Top on my list is:

2005 – > Toyota Argo, Citroen C1, Peugeot 107 Tops Our List of Cars Under 1K.

3 car manufacturers together on my top list? Yes, they are different manufacturers, with different looks but they share similar components. These cars share lots of components with a few cosmetic alterations. These cars are all produced by Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobile TPCA a joint venture between Toyota Motor Corporation and Groupe PSA.

Things you need to know about Peugeot 107, Citroen C1, Aygo:

  • Even at high mileage these cars very reliable.
  • Expect to pay over a grand for low mileage ones especially Aygo.
  • The average mpg for a manual is 65mpg.
  • The insurance group is very low.
  • The engine size even though it’s a small 1.0, is quite noisy so do not expect a quiet engine or cabin.
  • Even after a couple of years and doing an average of 10k a year, the loss of value is still lower than most of its rivals.
  • The interior is poor with cheap trims and a very trunk.

Verdict:  9 / 10 a buy for first time buyers.

The next on my list of our cars under 1k.:

2004 -> Hyundai Getz 1.1

The Getz is another small affordable car ideal for a first-time driver. It is actually cheaper than most of its rivals but may not be as reliable as the Aygo or Citroen C1. Nothing lasts forever but the Hyundai Getz is quite sturdy.

Things you need to know:

  • Not many around at high mileage as they become less reliable as it ages.
  • Expect to pay between £600 to £1000 for one with mileage around 60K and full MOT.
  • The average mpg for a 46mpg.
  • Insurance group from 9.
  • It is larger than most of its rivals.
  • The 1.5ltr diesel returns over 60miles per gallon and road tax are just £30 a year.
  • The handling is quite good and the only downside it is that very slow. Ideal for school runs and local trips.

Verdict: 8 / 10 a buy for first time buyers.

Honda Jazz 2002 -> 2008

We are all too familiar with Japanese reliability. This Honda Jazz is a perfect example of that and like the Toyota Aygo, even at high mileage, these cars do not stop moving. A well-maintained one could last up to 250k miles. Most of the owners usually do a lot of short journeys. The mileage could easily reach 300k if mostly driven on the motorway and, with regular service. No wonder they hold more value than most of its rivals and it could easily have been my number one choice if it wasn’t for the higher road tax than the Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107, and Citroen C1.

Things you need to know:

  • Best buy is the Automatic. It does not lose much value and really comfortable to drive.
  • Lots of manual around and they are not too expensive.
  • The average mpg is around 46mpg.
  • No shortage of head and rear legroom
  • Insurance group from 12 to 15.
  • It is larger than most of its rivals with larger rear passenger space.
  • The manual is not fun to drive as its suspension is firm and a noisy cabin.
  • The 1.2litre engine has a road of £125 a year.

Verdict: 8 / 10 a buy for first time buyers.

The next on my list of our cars under 1k.:

VW Polo 2002 -> 2009

If you are looking for a quality interior built with a lovely exterior, then look no further. This is the best option out of them in relation to quality built and performance results. I could not put it top on the list because you will not find many around with good mileage for less than £1000. However, with patience and good negotiating skills, one can get a cheap one with an average mileage of 75,000 for less than 1k.

The value of a car is determined by the market price and by the sellers who sets the price. Some individuals or dealers may be looking for a quick sale and not all quick cheap sale is dodgy. You only need to do your checks well before you buy any car. You can read our post about buying a cat s or cat N cars. This could interest you.

Things you need to know typical model 1.2litre:

  • The main negative of this car is the price. It can prove to be out of reach if you are looking for a low mileage one in a good condition.
  • The average mpg for a 47mpg and the diesel 1.4 can get up to 60 Mpg
  • No shortage of head and rear legroom.
  • Insurance group from 3 to 17.
  • It is larger than most of its rivals with larger rear passenger space.
  • The 1.2litre engine has a road of £160 a year but the 1.4diesel is just £30 a year.

Verdict 7 / 10 a buy for first time buyers.
